Baylor Bears Keep Rolling With Come-From-Behind Win Over Texas

AUSTIN, Texas -- The signs have been there for weeks this could be quite a special season for the Baylor Bears.

Finally Saturday, the proof beyond a doubt was provided when 25th-ranked Baylor rallied from nine points down in the third quarter to stun the Texas Longhorns, 30-22, in their own Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Baylor is no longer the doormat of the Big 12 South.

In fact, the Bears (7-2, 4-1 Big 12) are enjoying the view from the top after coming into Memorial Stadium on Saturday and beating Texas (4-4, 2-3) for the first time since 1997 and for the first time in Austin since 1991. As unbelievable as it is to imagine, the Bears are three wins away from claiming their first Big 12 South title, although that will be a huge challenge with a tough game at Oklahoma State next week followed by back-to-back home games against Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

A program that had never won four games in a Big 12 season is now part of the conversation.

"Times have changed," said Baylor sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin (pictured above), who finished the day with 219 yards passing and two touchdown passes third-and-long. "There has been that big bear that Baylor never beats this team or Baylor never beats that team. That bear is gone. We beat Texas and we can beat Oklahoma State and that's all that matters right now because that's the next team we've got on our slate."

Iowa Throws Up a Roadblock and Stops Michigan State's Unbeaten Run

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Road Work.

Delays Ahead.

Lane Closed.

Traffic warnings abounded for those traveling westbound on Interstate 80 toward Iowa City on Saturday morning. A minor annoyance, sure, but these signs were nothing compared to the "Road Closed" marker that Iowa posted inside Nile Kinnick Stadium later in the afternoon.

No. 5 Michigan State, the last Big Ten team with a reasonable shot of advancing to the BCS Championship Game in January, found a "Stop" sign awaiting its charmed 8-0 season in Iowa City. The previously unbeaten Spartans, who had not scored fewer than 26 points in any game this season, trailed 37-0 after three quarters.

The final score was 37-6.

"I did not see this coming," said Spartans coach Mark Dantonio, whose team has navigated dangerous curves more than a few times this season. "Our guys prepared mentally and emotionally. We came like we always have but when things start to snowball on you ("Avalanche Area?") it's hard to stop it and that's what I think we ran into."

FOX, Cablevision Reach Deal in Time for World Series Game 3, NFL Sunday

by Marc Lancaster

The dispute between FOX and Cablevision that has kept the network's programming off the air in New York and Philadelphia in recent weeks was finally resolved Saturday.

The deal came just in time to allow viewers affected by the showdown over carriage rates to watch Game 3 of the World Series between the Giants and Rangers and a day before Sunday's Jets-Packers game on FOX that would also have been blacked out if the stalemate continued.

Viewers already had missed out on the entire NLCS and the first two games of the World Series along with NFL games the last two Sundays.

It wasn't difficult to determine the victor in the agreement that emerged. A statement released by Cablevision made the company's feelings abundantly clear.

Panthers vs. Rams: Sam Bradford Guides St. Louis to Yet Another Home Win

Danny AmendolaThe St. Louis Rams gave Sam Bradford the easy throws early in the game. The swing passes to backs, the quick darts to wide receivers at the line of scrimmage. Then the rookie quarterback started looking downfield and the Rams opened up on the Carolina Panthers.

Bradford completed 25 of 32 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-10 St. Louis home win. It was his third straight game without an interception, an impressive statistic for a rookie quarterback. The Rams go into their bye week with a 4-4 record.

The 1-6 Panthers, meanwhile, continue to look for ways to generate offense.

A few quick thoughts on the game:

o. Steven Jackson, who became the Rams all-time leading rusher last week, came into the game with three straight 100-yard rushing games. He played against the Panthers even with a broken ring finger on his left hand. Jackson took no chances when he hit the ground on a tackle. He tried to close up the hand when he hit the ground so it would not be stepped on. He caught short passes with one hand.

o. Jackson carried 23 times for 59 yards. He did not have to lead the win because Bradford was sharp and the defense overmatched the Panthers.

o. Meanwhile, with running back DeAngelo Williams injured (foot), the Panthers put their offense in the hands of running back Jonathan Stewart and he was hemmed in most of the day. There were no gaps to run through.

o. John Fox, the Panthers coach, tried to pump up Stewart after one aggressive run. He stayed with his back on the sidelines and then they shared a fist bump. Right after that, wide receiver Steve Smith fumbled the ball on a third down play with 13:36 left in the fourth quarter. The Rams recovered and went in for a score to make it 17-3. At that point, the running game with Stewart was useless then because the Panthers had to throw. Stewart's disappointing season continued (14 carries, 30 yards).

o. The Rams have held seven of their first eight opponents under 20 points this season. They have given up 141 points, which is 17.6 per game, which could move them into the top five in scoring defense in the NFL.

o. The Panthers thought they had finally gotten their young wide receivers involved and confident, but Brandon LaFell and David Gettis were non-factors. They couldn't get open.

o. Late in the first half, LaFell went down the sideline and broke the route off. Matt Moore's third down pass sailed long over his head. LaFell and Gettis caught 14 passes in the win over the 49ers. They had four Sunday.

o. St. Louis tight end Michael Hoomanawanui left the game in the first half with a rib injury. It was a big loss for the Rams' offense because of injuries to the wide receiver corps. Hoomanawanui was being used downfield, a little deeper in routes than a typical tight end.

o. Does Carolina quarterback Matt Moore see the field? There was a throw in the third quarter that went to the right side where there were four defenders and one receiver. In addition, Moore does not know how to move side to side to get a throwing lane.

o. Bradford knows how to shift and see through the maze of players. Moore, who is perhaps 6-feet tall, cannot see the field. He had a pass tipped. He made high throws, off-target throws.

o. How long before the Panthers go back to Jimmy Clausen? Moore kept missing receivers and had three picked off.

o. How many times have some people in Charlotte wondered if it would have been OK, after all, to have Jake Delhomme back as the quarterback?

o. James Laurinaitis, the Rams linebacker, was hard to block on the blitz. He also got back into coverage to intercept a pass. He had eight tackles and two sacks.

o. The Rams need weapons outside for Bradford.

o. A stat that matters. The Rams came into the game 29th in scoring in the red zone. Here is the deal. They don't have any one who can beat a defensive back one-on-one in blitz situations. Opponents have been blitzing Bradford in the red zone figuring they can get him before a receiver gets open.

Redskins vs. Lions: Detroit Makes Donovan McNabb's Day Miserable

All the fuss over Mike Shanahan, Albert Haynesworth, Donovan McNabb and other high-profile actors get the vast majority of attention in Washington, but the Redskins' offense is struggling because the guys up front can't protect the quarterback.

That was certainly the case in Sunday's 37-25 defeat in Detroit that completed Washington's first half of the season -- including victories at Philadelphia and Chicago, losses at St. Louis and Detroit -- with a 4-4 record. The Lions sacked McNabb five times and backup Rex Grossman once (for a fumble and Detroit touchdown on his first snap) to improve to 2-5. Detroit is just 4-35 the last three seasons, but two of those victories have come over the Redskins.

David Ferreira: FC Dallas' Quiet Storm

fc dallas mls playoffs david ferreira

When speaking with David Ferreira on the phone, it's almost hard to believe that the voice on the other end of the line belongs to the ferocious FC Dallas midfielder who's been shredding opposing defenses all season. He's too quiet. Too polite. Too gracious.

The way he plays on the field, you'd expect him to be gruffer. More assertive. Maybe even combative.

But the fact that Ferreira seems to be a walking contradiction is his greatest asset. It's exactly what makes him so unique in Major League Soccer. He's the perfect blend of grace and tenacity. Strength and skill. Power and dexterity. He can delicately place a long pass on a forward's foot in one moment, then slide into an unflinching tackle the next.

He's got it all, and this year, people finally have started noticing.

Versus Gives Jenn Sterger the Boot

Jenn Sterger, the woman at the center of the Brett Favre texting controversy, is out of a job after her show was canceled by Versus on Friday.

Though The Daily Line is still listed on the Versus website as airing next week, Phil Reese, Sterger's manager, called the cancellation "unfortunate" and "part of the business."

Sterger, who was first noticed on live television by Brent Musburger as a fan at a Florida State football game, and later became a columnist for Sports Illustrated.com, allegedly received unwanted texts and pictures from Favre in 2008 when he played for the New York Jets. Sterger was an in-stadium game hostess for the Jets at the time. She has not, to date, responded to requests from NFL investigators for information or testimony regarding Favre.

Denny Hamlin Wins Again at Martinsville, Trails Jimmie Johnson by Six Points

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Denny Hamlin needed a long green flag stretch to get his No. 11 FedEx Toyota to run at its best, and he finally got that run during the final 100 laps at Martinsville Speedway, making the race-winning pass of Kevin Harvick on lap 471 of the 500-lap event.

The victory, Hamlin's third in a row at Martinsville, allowed him to pull within six points of Jimmie Johnson in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. It's the closest margin between first and second in the Chase since the playoff format was instituted in 2004.

Hamlin took the checkered flag by 2.318 seconds over Mark Martin, who made up two laps and was charging toward the front at the end. Harvick finished third after leading most of the later laps of the race. Kyle Busch finished fourth, followed by Jimmie Johnson.

It was Hamlin's seventh win this year and his 15th career victory. He's now won three in a row at Martinsville and four in all.

"We are back, baby!" Hamlin shouted on his radio as he crossed the finish line. "Awesome job! Great job of adjusting the car. It was the best it's been all day long. Pit crew, you did it right there. You got me out. Thanks, guys. Relentless, relentless job, guys."

In victory lane, Hamlin said, "I don't think I've ever closed that well, ever. We did not have a race-winning car until the very end. My pit crew got me from sixth to third before the last restart and that was the key."

Allen Iverson Officially Agrees to Play in Turkey

Allen IversonAllen Iverson has officially agreed to a two-year, $4 million contract with Besiktas, a professional team in Turkey. Rumors of negotiations have existed for weeks, but Iverson's management confirmed a deal was in place with a release Thursday.

Iverson and Besiktas officials will hold a news conference Friday in New York.

"He's ecstatic," Iverson's manager, Gary Moore, told the Associated Press by phone. "He's very excited, very happy the people in Turkey want him, the people in Turkey appreciate what he brings to the game, and he can't wait to get over there."

Iverson, 35, heads overseas after spending 14 season in the NBA. The No. 1 overall pick in 1996 was a four-time scoring champ, winning the MVP award in 2001 and climbing to 17th on the league's all-time scoring list.

However, after bouncing between four teams in the last two years, he seems to have worn out his NBA welcome, failing to draw a single contract offer or even a training camp invitation this fall.

Entrepreneurs and Pirates: NBA Agents Lament State of Industry

by Sam Amick

In the New Jersey office of longtime NBA agent Keith Glass, there is a sign that says everything about the dog-eat-dog world in which he works.

Keith Glass
Keith Glass
"It's from Mark Twain, and it (reads), 'I'll always do right, which will surprise some people and astonish the rest,' " Glass said, "It's as simple as that."

If only he were right.

The agent business has never been a simple one, and some of the league's longest-tenured professionals say it has become increasingly more complicated in recent years.

And even dirtier than usual.

Agents are stealing clients in the boldest of ways, looking for a weakness in the business relationship between a player and his representative and using any means necessary to exploit it. Some players and their family members or friends aren't any better, pressuring agents to bend -- no, make that break -- the rules and take their operation under the table if they hope to be the chosen representative. The only law enforcement in this Wild West city is the players' union, which certainly has regulations in place but has had neither the time nor the resources to enforce them.

Danroy Henry Memorial a Requiem for a Young Life Lost

BOSTON -- At Danroy Henry's memorial service Friday, the football players of Pace University wore dark suits and somber expressions and a few signs of a long season.

One walked on crutches with his foot in a cast. Another wore a bandage on his wrist with his arm in a sling. Others moved slowly, limping slightly. But their aches and pains were inconsequential to the reason for the gathering.

The players were among about 2,000 persons in a big room of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center who met to honor a teammate slain almost two weeks ago by police bullets in Thornwood, N.Y., a suburb north of New York City.

Desmond Hinds, a wide receiver, recalled that Henry, who was from the Boston suburbs, was a Celtics fan and had looked forward to Tuesday's NBA opener against LeBron James and the Miami Heat and had frequently predicted a Boston victory.

"I can't wait! I can't wait!" Hinds said, recalling his friend's words in the days before his death. The Celtics won the game, nine days after Henry died.

"I believe they won because he was on their side," Hinds said while standing on a flower-filled stage that included a photograph of Henry and various football decorations.

Denny Hamlin Wins Martinsville Pole

Considering Denny Hamlin's record at Martinsville Speedway -- two straight victories and three wins in the last five races -- you wouldn't think he'd be too worried about whether he could hold onto the pole position for Sunday's Tums Fast Relief 500 after posting the fastest lap in his qualifying run Friday.

But winning the pole means getting the pick of the pit stalls, and at Martinsville the best one is first in line, right behind the exit line of the pits.

So as Hamlin waited nervously in the lounge of his team transporter while the rest of the field took their runs, he was. . . well, let's let him describe it in his usual frank manner: "I wasn't wishing bad luck," he said, "but I was just like, 'Slip, slip, slip, slip.'

"It came true for us. We've had to work extra hard today because we have worked just on qualifying."

The pole position at this tight, half-mile short track was "objective number one" for Hamlin and he and his team devoted all of practice to the qualifying setup.

Brett Favre Says He Expects to Start Sunday

Filed under:

The Minnesota Vikings have officially listed Brett Favre as questionable for Sunday's game against the New England Patriots. But if it's up to Favre, he's playing.

Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder on Saturday afternoon that his heel and ankle injuries have healed significantly and he expects to be on the field in New England.

Favre was limping badly after last Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers, and he spent much of this week wearing a protective boot over his injured ankle while sitting out practice.

However, he participated in practice on a limited basis on Friday, replacing the protective boot with a wrap on the ankle. A day later, all indications are that his NFL-record streak of 291 consecutive starts will increase to 292 on Sunday.

David Stern Supports LeBron James' Decision to Move to Heat

by Surya Fernandez

David SternNBA commissioner David Stern was in the house for the Miami Heat's home opener against the Orlando Magic and he was in a good mood before tipoff. His enthusiasm for the start of the regular season after such a frenzied offseason was tempered somewhat with the looming dark cloud that could be protracted labor negotiations.

Nevertheless, Stern was happy to answer questions from the media about a wide variety of topics before the tipoff. Inevitably his thoughts on the biggest story in the NBA were offered and he was pleased to congratulate the Heat for their accomplishments this past summer.

"These roster changes in Miami have certainly occasioned a fair amount of publicity and it's kind of fun to watch all the speculation and the combination of 'mail the trophy to Miami' or not, 'play the season' or not, etc. But it's a great game and we always play the season and it always has interesting results.

"I'm really very happy for Micky Arison who has been very devoted to the Miami community," said Stern, noting that the Heat owner has continuously re-invested in his franchise over the years and is now reaping the benefits because of it. "They're going to have an interesting season because the expectations are very high."

Legendary NASCAR Executive Jim Hunter Dies

Filed under:

NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter died Friday night in Daytona Beach after a year-long battle with cancer.

Almost always seen wearing a NASCAR #48 ball cap -- referencing the sport's 1948 beginnings -- Hunter was a legendary figure in the sport, having worked as a racing journalist, public relations specialist, president of Darlington Raceway and ultimately as a top executive with the sanctioning body during a 40-year career with NASCAR.

(He's pictured at Darlington Raceway in 2008 with the Charlotte Observer's Jim Utter, at left, and Sirius NASCAR Radio's Claire B. Lang, right).

"Jim Hunter was one of NASCAR's giants,'' NASCAR Chairman Brian France said. "For more than 40 years Jim was part of NASCAR and its history. He loved the sport but loved the people even more.

"It seems as if everyone in the sport called him a friend. Jim will forever be missed by the NASCAR community.''

Shriners Open Preview: Rickie Fowler's Chance to Shine

Filed under:

Martin LairdAs the PGA Tour enters the final two weeks of its season, players head to Las Vegas for the Justin Timberlake Shiners Hospitals for Children Open in what shapes up to be an exciting tournament.

The field, highlighted by 10 winners on Tour this season, will be taking dead aim at TPC Summerlin. This par 72, 7,243-yard course yielded 1,821 birdies a year ago -- the highest total of any tournament in 2009. Martin Laird, pictured right, recorded two eagles and 23 birdies on his way to a 19-under total and a playoff victory over Chad Campbell and George McNeill.

While both Laird and Campbell return to Las Vegas in 2010, much of this week's attention will be focused on rookie Ricky Fowler. The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakout year with five top 5s and a top 25 standing on the money list. A win would make him one of the youngest winners on tour since Tiger Woods notched his first career victory at this tournament in 1996 at the age of 20.

If Fowler can pull off the win, he would be the 10th first-time winner in the tournament's 29-year history. And you have to like his chances. Fowler returns to his home course after finishing fifth in putting last year, so look for him to know use his familiarity with the course to get a leg up on the field.

Giants' Hot Start Thanks to Pass Rush and Potent Offense, Not Special Teams

Three games into the season and the New York Giants resembled the team that had crashed to a 3-8 record in their final 11 games of 2009. Four weeks later, it's a whole new ballgame.

The Giants are enjoying their bye week not only leading the NFC East but tied with Atlanta for the conference's best record at 5-2.

What's gone right: Despite losing Mathias Kiwankua (four sacks in three games) for the season, New York's pass rush has returned to the form that made it so feared in 2007-08. The Giants have 24 sacks, 18 in the past four games including an astounding 10 against Chicago. Along the way, New York has kayoed five quarterbacks: Carolina's Matt Moore; Chicago's Jay Cutler and Todd Collins; Detroit's Shaun Hill and Dallas' Tony Romo. A year after finishing seventh in the NFC in total defense under since-dismissed coordinator Bill Sheridan, New York is first under replacement Perry Fewell. The Giants have forced 16 turnovers.

Ahmad Bradshaw has been terrific in his first year as the No. 1 running back, leading the league with 708 rushing yards while averaging 5.3 per carry. Former starter Brandon Jacobs finally accepted his second banana status and is averaging 4.9 per carry with five touchdowns. Receiver Hakeem Nicks is having a monster sophomore year ranking second in the league with 45 catches, an NFL-high eight for touchdowns. Steve Smith, who broke out in a big way in 2009, is right behind Nicks with 43 catches.

What's gone wrong: The special teams have been lousy. Darius Reynaud, acquired from Minnesota, is the NFC's worst return man, and will likely be replace by Will Blackmon after the bye. Rookie punter Matt Dodge has been very shaky which helps explains the awful punt coverage. Veteran kicker Lawrence Tynes is just 3-for-5 on field goal tries beyond 42 yards.

Quarterback Eli Manning is having a very weird season. He's tied for the NFL lead with 14 touchdown passes after throwing a career-high four against the Cowboys on Monday. However, Manning also leads the league with 11 interceptions, although an amazing seven of them have deflected off of his intended targets.

Not only is Kiwanuka done for the year, but center Shaun O'Hara (three), linebacker Keith Bulluck (three) and Tynes (one) have already missed games with injuries.

Heath Slocum Wins McGladrey Classic as Fall Finish Plays On

The PGA Tour, amid much fanfare and self promotion, ended its season two weeks ago. You think Heath Slocum cares?

The Fall Finish means golf, much like telemarketing, never shuts down. So while Slocum's final-round 68 and 14-under finish Sunday in the McGladrey Classic at St. Simons, Ga., may not have earned center stage, it needs no apologies.

"I mean, I think that's why we play golf is to win," Slocum said. "I mean there's just no other feeling like it. "

The last time Slocum won was the 2009 Barclays, when a birdie on the final hole gave him a one-shot victory over Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Steve Stricker. It came in the FedEx Cup playoffs and vaulted Slocum into the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup hoopla. In contrast, Sunday's victory came against a field that featured only four players ranked among the world's top 50.

Guess what?

MLS Playoffs Schedule

mls playoff scheduleThe sprint to the 15th MLS Cup Final has begun.

Eight clubs qualified for the playoffs following a 30-game, seven-month regular season. But it requires just four more matches to claim the title.

The Eastern and Western conference semifinals will be played as a home-and-home, two-game series decided by the total number of goals scored. The higher seed starts on the road. If the clubs are tied after 180 minutes, a 30-minute overtime period will be played, followed by penalty kicks if necessary. Road goals are not used as a tiebreaker.

The conference finals and MLS Cup Final will be single games, with OT and PKs used if needed. The higher remaining seed in each conference will host the conference final.

The Colorado Rapids and San Jose Earthquakes, who qualified for the playoffs as the lowest-ranked wild cards from the West, were shifted to the East and could become champions of that conference.

The MLS Cup Final is Nov. 21 at Toronto FC's BMO Field.

LeGarrette Blount Packing a Punch in Buccaneers Backfield

Filed under:

LeGarrette BlountTAMPA, Fla. -- Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris is known for his up-tempo, competitive and fiery practices, so there have been a couple times things have gotten heated under the blazing Florida sun and rookie running back LeGarrette Blount has been in the middle of the fray.

That's when quarterback Josh Freeman intervenes.

"Hey, LeGarrette!" Freeman likes to shout. "Whatever you do, don't hit him!"

And he laughs.

Better yet, Blount laughs, too.

"It really doesn't bother me anymore," Blount said.

Maybe not, but for however long Blount lasts in the NFL -- and certainly well after that -- he will always be linked with it.

"He made a mistake," Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik said. "And he paid a great price for it."

Jets-Packers Friday Injury Update: Darrelle Revis, Donald Driver Probable

The Green Bay Packers will be the first team to see what the New York Jets look like when they are at full strength this Sunday at New Meadowlands Stadium as it appears three of New York's key players on offense and defense all will play pain-free.

Center Nick Mangold, outside linebacker Calvin Pace and cornerback Darrelle Revis all were listed as probable on Friday's injury and participated in a full practice. Mangold has been nursing a shoulder injury, Pace is recovering from a broken foot suffered in the last preseason game and Revis is bouncing back from a strained hamstring.

Mangold is the quarterback of the offensive line and helps open holes and create running lanes for running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene, while Revis went to the Pro Bowl after proving to be one of the best shutdown corners in the league. Pace is a pass-rushing machine and teams up with Bart Scott and Jason Taylor to form one of the most feared linebacking groups in the league.

Bud Selig Open to Playoff Expansion, Will Not Discuss Instant Replay

by Ed Price

Bud SeligSAN FRANCISCO -- While proclaiming that a Giants-Rangers World Series proves baseball has more parity than ever, commissioner Bud Selig on Thursday said the playoffs could still expand as soon as next year.

Expansion would likely mean adding a second wild card in each league and having those wild cards play off to narrow the field to the current eight.

Players' union head Michael Weiner recently said the players are open to expanded playoffs, mentioning 2012 as the starting point, since that would come after the current collective bargaining agreement expires.

But asked Thursday, after presenting the Roberto Clemente Award to Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, if the playoffs could grow in 2011, Selig said, "Yes."

Asked where those discussions stand, Selig said, "That's for later. I've said that I would consider it and we will.

Former Florida QB Kerwin Bell Has Raised Jacksonville's Profile

Filed under:

It's a question Kerwin Bell hears endlessly. Do you want to coach football at a larger college? It's an answer Bell gives repeatedly. Bell can't say he wouldn't want to, but he loves the players he has recruited, he loves to build programs and compete, and he'd love to win championships - at Jacksonville University, on the banks of the St. Johns River, in north Florida.

Yes, that Jacksonville University.

"Nobody knew about us, no one really cared about coming and visiting us," Bell told FanHouse.

Well, they do now.

Bell, the former record-setting quarterback from the University of Florida, has dramatically changed the culture within Jacksonville's program since his arrival in 2007.

Bell, 45, has the Dolphins ranked in the top 25 for the first time in history in the Fathead.com/Sports Network media poll that recognizes Division I Football Championship Subdivision teams. JU is looking to win its second Pioneer Football League title in three years and earn a qualifying berth in the FCS playoffs for the first time in history.

Entrepreneurs and Pirates: NBA Agents Lament State of Industry

Mark Recchi One of Few Athletes Remaining From That '80s Show

Filed under:

Mark RecchiWASHINGTON -- As Mark Recchi headed into the Verizon Center dressing room after a morning skate the day of an early season game against the Capitals, a Boston Bruins teammate slapped him on the shoulder and said: "How's it going, Recchin'-Ball?''

Just as quickly the player disappeared through a door, so it was difficult to tell whether that teammate was one of the two Bruins on the roster who was born after Recchi's first NHL game on November 16, 1988.

The longer the 42-year-old Recchi plays, the longer the list grows of ways he is unique in the NHL -- and in all of sports. Only one other current NHL player, Mike Modano, suited up in the decade of the 1980s. The two others in the Big Four sports include Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer, who hasn't appeared in a game since July and, although he plans to return next season, is still recovering from an injured pitching elbow; and Omar Vizquel, who began his career with the Mariners in 1989 and played for the White Sox this past season.

Being the last remnant in team sports from the days of big hair and parachute pants was not something Recchi had either expected or even aspired to when he debuted, as a fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
